i have server 2012 print server. plan on creating second 1 failover purposes. installing shared printers on client pcs using group policy preferences.  instead of using \\servername\printer path, can create dns record server name , use \\dnsname\printer ?  way, if first server dies, edit dns record point second server instead of renaming second server , changing ip of second server. that thoughts after little digging, found out there more it.  registry entries need modified.  changes need made both server , clients work.  think better change ip , server name match old 1 when needed.  thanks. i have seen   in windows firewall  for rules , under protocol , ports local port , remort port  are  set 'all ports'  and  protocol type 'any' .if  case  and windows firewall turned on ,  if  create  one rule block  most of ports happen firewall rules have different other attributes set associated rule, example service name, there may exist rule says particualar service ports open protocol. there exist process or service uses dynamic ports based on each client request. in such scenario these rules valuable. by default inbound ports blocked firewall(yes few exception, based on out of box rules), dont need create rule blocking ports. still can create if scenario requries that. in case have 2 conflicting rules 1 allows , other denies traffic, deny rule of more weight , overrides allow rule.   hope helps! i create a print server chain; meaning, have system printer physically attached; sharing printer network ( \\windowsserver\printershare )  don't want users add network printer computers.  want add \\otherserver\printershare user workstations, , define local port on "otherserver" \\windowsserver\printershare . this way documents spooled on corporate print server first, before being forwarded final server has printer directly attached.  if print test page logged on locally "otherserver", document prints @ printer on "windowsserver".  however, when add \\otherserver\printershare on client workstation; document remains in queue on "otherserver" "error-printing". both servers windows 2003 r1, client pc xp. all x32. is there issue delgating authentication in print queue chain this?  there way hard set authentication between otherserver , windowsserver client workstation jobs use hard set creden...

hi all, hopefully can me literally tearing hair out one! i have server few years old , running windows server 2008 r2 standard. particular client has 2 servers 1 running sbs2003 , one. the client located across 2 different locations linked via 2 draytek routers. 1 of locations (where servers not  located) access 2 servers via remote desktop connections. use remoteapps access applications on local pcs. this works fine. a data drive located on the sbs2003 box , when access locally server 2008 server mapped network drive can access without problem through mapped drive in computer. have created batch file can work through remoteapps follows: %systemroot%\explorer.exe "f:" the vast majority of times works , when batch file executed f:/ share opens both locally , through remoteapps. however no reason @ randomly stops working. instead of f:/ share showing in new windows explorer window shows command prompt above command in there not open drive. happens on ...

i need input on how organise access file share if domain controller computers unavailable... i have large network many small sites (over 100 separate locations), each having 2-6 computers. need these computers domain enable many remote management, asset management , software deployment tasks. have been testing first few sites, running major trouble if domain controller unavailable reason. in each site, 1 of computers is a "main computer" hosts few shares , databases other computers in site. main computer desktop, no server grade hardware in sites. when domain controller available (= wan functional), there no problems. computers can talk each other happily. however, if connection domain controller cut, authentication between member computers fails, , site rendered useless computers lose access "main computer" shares. this unacceptable, need find solution or workaround. all computers in question windows xp sp3, latest patches, on desktop...
