Server 2008 SP2 not R2 Failover

i inherited 2 sets of identical hardware server 2008 standard sp2 installed, neither '08 r2 consultants managing resources.  each server running vmware2 server different virtual machines.   host1 has production1 , dev1 virtual machines , host2 has production2 , dev2. 

i need change configuration host1 , host2 have same configuration , 1 redundant other.  (i don't care if it's hyper-v or vsphere in terms of knowledge, cost issue though) can create failover cluster automatically move vm's 1 set of hardware if fails without rebooting , without upgrading r2?

i able move vm's , forth perform maintenance right primary focus redundancy , fail over. 

there network attached storage in form of mybookworld hard drive , willing iscsi san device host virtual machines.

i see lot of demos hyper-v live migration , it, question whether or not can implement solution without buying pair of r2 licenses hosts. 

there 3rd party software solutions iscsi san starwind software me compare costs of upgrading r2 live migration feature.

the general principles failover clustering scenario describe.

if hosta fails, ressourcers automatically started on hostb. - happend restart of virtual machines. - case or without r2.

what r2 live migration offers, possibility perform 0 downtime maintance. - planned downtime. not in case of unplanned downtime.

 

clustered ressources available long there node alive , has capacity clustered ressources.

 

the answer questions more directly:

1: yes possible achieve clustering without r2.

2: yes, switch happend automatically.

3: reboot virtual machines.

 

there quite alot of misconception how clustering virtual machines works. people believe long cluster ressources, setting 0 downtime solution application. are, providing redundant hardware setup. working on different layers, mixing up..

if talking database clustering, benefits go bit beyond hardware, because way databases work compared virtual machines.

Can no longer user MS Update - Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered

hi, i'm new server 2003.  installed it.  removed enhanced ie security.  proceed download , install windows server 2003 sp1, of dot net (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, , updates), , sp2. after downloaded , installed of above, tried windows update menu option in ie.  (ie 8 windows server 2003) , sits there "done" in lower left hand corner.  never brings in window. so try www.microsoft.com -> download , trails -> update.  received error message "files required use microsoft update no longer registered or installed on computer".  click on register or reinstall files me now.  window changes , "check latest version of windows updating software .... ".   sits there (last time sat there on hour). i went on internet , found instructions: regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wucltui.dll regsvr32 atl.dll regsvr32 msxml3.dll did not work either.  have other suggestions?...

How do a find data in one file, search for it in another file and if not found, write a custom message to another file
