Migrate DC to Hyper-V (Disk2VHD)
dear all,
i have old windows server 2003 r2 x64 service pack 2 physical server acting domain controller , dns server in active directory domain. 1 of several dcs (the others windows server 2008 r2 x64), old piece of software bound , talk no other. need to convert vm on our hyper-v host, , cannot demote-promote or tamper it. has no fsmos assigned (though did in remote past).
i considering using disk2vhd create image of , import on hyper-v host, have couple of questions:
1) disk2vhd can run "on system that’s online", wary enough of going on in live dc prefer doing when system down (i have other dcs, short downtime on 1 fine). how use disk2vhd on down system?
2) server has 2 partitions, c:\ , d:\, should create vhd file per partition or 1 including both? what would be the difference?
3) pitfalls should aware of concerning moving dc?
thank help.
yours,
fd
hi!
please note i'm not microsoft representative.
i believe recommended approach degrade current dc , install new server , make dc instead.
however, possible p2v current dc using disk2vhd, i've done myself 2008 dc without encountering issues. here thoughts questions:
1) disconnect physical dc lan, preventing changes in network being registered while running disk2vhd. try not make serious modifications domain during conversion.
2) would suggest 2 separate vhd files. this gives possibility expand sizes of c: and d: drives individually in future.
3)what's important after conversion, shut down physical dc , never turn on old dc ever again.
finally, i want underline p2v migrating dc not recommended, , not officially supported in case of disaster event.
