DFSR: old files in staging area.

hello, have issue concerning dfsr , staging area.

server information:
2 windows server 2008 r2
have been replicating many months

problem information:
occasionally see event id's 4202 indicating staging area above high watermark.
there old files in staging area not being removed.
note: please read on before replying 'increase staging area'

what have done attempt solve issue:
after doing research first time encountered event, increased our staging area size default 4gb 6gb.

this worked little while, couple of months later saw event id 4202 reappear. again, increased staging area 6gb 8gb.

again, worked little while, pesky 4202 again.

information leading conclusion staging area size not issue:

the current size of staging area folder :5.7gb
current size of replicated folder (everything being replicated, go staging area) is:  4.1gb
there 4 files on 100mb in size.
largets of these 4 400mb, smallest 100mb. other files less 100mb (most considerably less).

needless say, staging area should more adequate. noticing there files in staging area on year ago.

screenshot

the oldest of these 8/31/2009
there many files 2010

the way understand dfsr, once file has been synchronized across members, deleted staging area. files older month or 2 should not in staging area. also, once high watermark reached, dfs begins delete old files staging area. since have hit high watermark @ least twice, these old files should have been deleted.

my questions:

is possible preventing dfs deleting these old files?

is safe delete these old files?  by "safe" mean, actual file on dfs member not affected, staging area file deleted. , if file on dfs member not in synch dfs attempt synchronize other member.

if unsafe, there way of determining file not synching correctly? (in staging area files human-unfriendly names 213234-{3211-...)

has come across before? (dfs not deleting old files in staging area)

please note have spent couple of hours on google , technet trying find helpful predicament.

thank you
