Unable to login into SBS 2003 Domain server
problems:
1. vista workstations configured dhcp cannot ip address sbs server/dc. they 169.254 ip addresses
2. vista & xp workstations cannot access email via outlook
3. workstations cannot remote desktop sbs server/domain controller
4. sbs/dc server (abcsbs01)
we think problem dns setup, nothing has changed in dns setup.
environment:
· vista sp1 workstations office/outlook 2007
· xp sp2 & sp3 workstations office/outlook 2003
· win 2003 sbs server sp2 exchange, domain controller & dns server dhcp server (sbs/dc) (192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.8). no windows firewall (abcsbs01)
· win 2003 file server, domain controller (192.168.0.3). no windows firewall. (abcfs01)
· motorola surfboard cable modem – dhcp disabled (192.168.100.1)
· smoothwall firewall (192.168.0.1)
recent maintenance tasks on server
the maintenance task done on sbs/dc swap exchsrvr disk contains mdbdata files. no program folder locations changed. after stopping exchange services, these files relocated new disk , disk allocated same drive letter former disk. all exchange services start without error , can access exchange mail box via owa on sbs/dc.
connectivity tests
workstations
· vista workstations attempt log on sbs , 169.254.* ip address ip address not handed out.
· on vista workstations, connection-specific dns suffix blank in ipconfig.
· when doing network diagnostics, windows cannot find “abcsbs01” click more information dns.
· when doing ipconfig /displaydns, name not exist appears in relation dns servers described in our dns setup (viz abcsbs01, abcfs01, _kerberos._tcp.dc._msdcs.abc.local, _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.abc.local. many external web sites listed here also.
· have done ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /degisterdns
· xp workstations can valid 192.168 ip address cannot access exchange via outlook. connection-specific dns suffix not blank in ipconfig
· if configure vista workstations fixed ip address, can access domain resources (files & folders on file server) cannot access email on exchange server. either local pst opened or workstation issues error microsoft exchange server unavailable. retry/work offline/cancel.
· can remote desktop abcfs01 file server not sbs/dc abcsbs01
· from workstation, when attempt ping sbs/dc – via ip address or workstation name, time-outs
· when doing nslookup <dc name> dns request timeout server unknown correct ip address of dns server returned.
· only workstations displayed in network leaf of explorer.
sbs/dc (abcsbs01) – connectivity
· when doing ipconfig, 2 ip addresses returned same nic (192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.8). has been case long time without problem. the old ip address used old nic displaying along current ip address.
· when pinging via w/station name – viz abcsbs01, valid ip address returned. when ping same ip address, workstation name returned
· when ping additional ip address, successful
· can access file server file via remote desktop , can access files & folders on file server
· can access internet
dhcp – services started
net logon services started
i don't believe have group policies preventing logging in.
dns setup
round robin not enabled. dynamic updates enabled – secure 7 days.
the server name abcsbs01.local appears every occurrence of valid iip address (192.168.0.2). the old ip address (192.168.0.8) listed server name in dns setup along current ip addressof server in domaindnszones & forestdnszones in dns setup
we have done, ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /registerdns, dcdiag /fix, net stop netlogin, net start netlogin.
when run dcdiag again, still error guid <long number>._msdcs.jsr.local) couldn't resolved, server name (jsrsbs01.jsr.local) resolved ip address (192.168.0.2) , pingable. check ip address registered correctly dns server. abcsbs01 failed test connectivity
other dcdiag tests pass.
where enter name of server overcome unknown error in dns name?
we have looked through event logs , haven’t found looks particularly informative.
where else need check/look overcome login problem believe preventing access exchange mail boxes via outlook?
