About Lingering Objects. I am not sure to understand something
hello,
i have root domain , several child domains.
i have event 1988 on root domain controllers; nothing on child dcs.
event type: error
event source: ntds replication
event category: replication
event id: 1988
date: 25/10/2012
time: 11:06:19
user: nt authority\anonymous logon
computer: <root dc>
source dc (transport-specific network address):

i not sure understand error :
- seems source guid name of child dc (dc1).
i dont understand dn of object seen lingered object. why show name of child domain ?
why have 1988 event on root dc , not on child dcs ?
if run following command :
repadmin /removelingeringobjects dc1_netbiosname <guid_source dc of event>(c83afrfa-er75-4258*****) dc=child,dc=root,dc=domain,dc=local /advisory_mode
i have error :
dsreplicaverifyobjectsw() failed status 8440 (0x20f8):
can't retrieve message string 8440 (0x20f8), error 1815.

alternately can demote & promote server containg lingering..sometimes difficult remove lingering object either using repadmin /removelingeringobjects or other tool & easiest way deal such issues demote & re-promote dc. if lingering objects spreads int domain more difficult tackle them.
you need forcefully demote server having lingering object runnning dcpromo/forceremoval followed metadata cleanup , promote server dc.if faulty dc fsmo role holder need seize fsmo on other dc.
