Shadow Copy - How to configure an external drive as alternative storage volume

hi all,

i've heard it's been done before , perhaps can lead me in right direction.

know in windows server 2008 r2, can go "windows file explorer", can right click on hard drive, , select "configure shadow copies".  or alternately can run 'vssuirun' command box open shadow copies window.

have added external 5tb drive windows 2008 r2 server via usb 3.0 pcie card.  works , recognized windows.  external drive g: shows in "shadow copies window".

want set our d2d storage drive e: run it's shadow copies on external drive g:

when highlight drive e: , click on "settings" button can choose pull down, drive e or c.  drive g not available.

when try way using command box , type in command
'vssadmin list shadowstorage'  see external drive g listed

when issue command  'vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=e: /on=g: /maxsize=95%'
i error “shadow copying specified volume not supported.”
