Continual reboot loop after upgrade to R2

i have virtualized server 2008 machine using vmware. virtualization successful , vm runs fine. trying upgrade 2008 r2, , upgrade appears complete successfuly able login once , use server. however, once reboot in, server gets "applying computer settings..." , reboots , in endless loop. never able login server again. have turned off automatic reboot , tried in safemode same results.  have tried uninstalling vm tools, , using r2 , without sp1, no difference. i'm not sure next troubleshoot issue. have machine snapshotted can revert after failed upgrades.
