symptom
consider following scenario:
- multiple users log on computer running windows server 2008 r2 or windows 7. these users use computer access remote server shares files , printers using server message block (smb) protocol.
- you log on computer access server.
- the connection between computer , server timed out after connection stays in inactive status long time. or, connection fails because of network error.
- you try reestablish connection computer using name of server.
in scenario, may unable reestablish connection. additionally, receive following error message:
error code: 0x80070035
network path not found.
notes
- when issue occurs, can still access server using naming convention of server.
example, can access server using qualified domain name (fqdn). or, can use ip address if cannot access server using short name. - if collect network trace when try access server, find there no traffic server.
cause
this issue occurs because of error in mrxsmb10.sys driver.
mrxsmb10.sys driver specifies logon id first time connection established remote server shares files , printers using smb protocol. logon id , name of server saved in server entry of smb redirector. example, logon id , 1 of following server names use establish connection saved:
- short name
- ip address
- fqdn
however, mrxsmb10.sys driver not update logon id after user used logon id logs off. therefore, attempt use name first connection fails regardless of user name.
resolution
download , install hot fix described in following microsoft knowledge base article:
you cannot access remote server shares files , printers using smb protocol computer running windows server 2008 r2 or windows 7

workaround
to work around issue, restart computer.
