Windows Update fails and causes reboot of Server 2008 R2
hello , in advance trying help. going start giving general overview of problem , detail steps have taken , errors encountered identify issue.
when selecting windows update start menu, able query update service , see updates waiting installed (kb2508979 [junk email filter], anti-spam v. 3.3.9921.496, , sp1). select 2 important updates , not sp1 , choose install. after 1 minute dialog box appears stating: "you logged off - windows has encountered critical problem , restart automatically in 1 minute. please save work now." server commences rebooting , every time try install these updates. @ standstill installing windows updates on machine of now, have done amount of troubleshooting , have lot more additional info going on below.
my first hunch windows installer service, after server rebooted went services, , selected start windows installer service (which set manual), , got same "you logged off...reboot" error got when trying run windows update; "could not start: error 1726: remote procedure call failed". figured maybe needed run @ startup before service, , changed setting automatic windows installer service, caused never ending reboot cycle, had use safe mode in order change setting , stop happening.
so, based on above, assume having issues windows installer msi.dll file, , want find out version information on installer .dll. open cmd admin, , run msiexec /? check msi.dll version, instructed in post, , crashed cmd every time before can display results. since doesn't work, maybe can right click on file in windows explorer , select properties check version, right? wrong, trying context menu msi.dll file crashes windows explorer every time try.
after long period of googling, able find windows update troubleshooter fix-it (found here), ends poorly following error: "an unexpected error occurred, troubleshooting wiz cannot continue. package id: windows update diagnostic, error code: 0x80070057, user: {domain administrator}, context: elevated"
i able track down system update readyness tool standalone download , ran on affected server, , installs, not fix issue. info on update can found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
here can find digging through event log, when trying run updates windows update: "source: user32, event id: 1074, process wininit.exe has initiated restart of computer {server_name} on behalf of ntauthority\system following reason: no title reason can found. reason code: 0x50006, comment: system process system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly status code 255" along error @ same time: "dcom got error 1726 attempting start service msiserver arguments "" event id: 10005" ***two things should noted dcom error: 1) empty quotes after arguments...as if there no arguments. 2) same error syntax when try manually start windows installer service through services.msc described earlier.
the last successful updates in reverse chronological order prior issue occurring kb2505438, kb2488113, kb2484033, , kb2483614.
