Cannot open older Office Docs from Windows Server 2012 shares?
i @ wits end on one.
up until last week our main file server in remote server closet on windows server 2008 vm.
the server crashed , restored data onto windows server 2012r2 vm in in real datacenter (still remote location).
everything seemed fine except users started complaining being unable open files.
digging deeply, here’s i've been able deduce…
the problem occurs in 1 of our 20 locations (my location), on older office format documents (.xls, .doc, .ppt), larger 500k in size.
- other locations not having issue.
- if file less 500k problem doesn't occur.
- if file 1 of newer format (.xlsx, .docx, .pptx) problem doesn't occur.
- if file in different format (.pdf, .txt, etc), no matter size, problem doesn't occur.
i have tried on multiple machines, including bare bones machine no av, not joined domain, , still same results in location.
what happens when try open file bit strange.
- the application open, file start download
- about 2 -3 seconds download stop (bandwidth usage goes minimal)
- about 10 – 15 seconds later application try restart download server doesn't send (no blip on bandwidth usage)
- it cycle 3 times in total , error out
- if try cancel while cycling, connection share cut 30 seconds until times out
if open same file machine in 1 of other locations, file opens fine.
using remote computer can save xlsx file (or docx, or pptx) on same share, in same directory.
i go open new format file , works supposed to.
i've tried disabling smb2 protocol on both server , client…didn’t help.
i tried disabling smb1 protocol on server , client…didn’t help.
i've tried mixture of 2 no positive results.
any ideas on one?
can open these files locally? mean if copy same file other locations, file opens fine client? error message prompted when open these older office files? there error message in event log? please provide more detailed information issue.
best regards,
mandy
